Idea Description
There is much talk (and much action) on household appliances that store information for their own future reference, as well as those that transmit aggregate information about user behavior to companies for data mining (small-dish satellite TV is notorious for this).
Records can be kept of when the appliance is powered on or off, location (if GPS enabled), ambient temperature, whatever data are thought relevant to that particular appliance.
I propose the design and use of appliances that upload operational data to public databases for analysis by whoever is interested. Researchers would gain access to a large amount of data for example on energy use in household furnaces and air conditioners under use conditions, information on use patterns of cars, preferences in radio, TV, internet and other media, etc. The possibilities are endless!
Privacy option would be simple and hard-wired...simply a two-position switch...with "public" and "private" settings, that users can change easily and at any time. And of course if the appliance isn't connected to the network no information escapes. Private users could still use gathered information for their own purposes.
People are "volunteering" all sorts of information for proprietary use. Volunteering information for public use costs no more privacy, and the power that is information gets spread a lot more thinly. Think about it!
